Basic School Domazlice, Komenskeho 17Information about our schoolThe basic school Domazlice, Komenskeho 17, is located in a historical building along the main street in Domazlice, running parallel with the square, next to a town brewery. Two, nearly hundred years old buildings in the very center of town - former boy and girl schools, were originally separated by several houses. The Czech writer Karel Matej Capek Chod was born and lived in one of these houses, which were pulled down in the late sixties. A small memorial was erected in the honor of Karel Matej and the two schools were connected via a new building, consisting of school canteen, change-room, nursery and several classrooms.
The school building has been thoroughly reconstructed recently. A great deal of funds for the reconstruction has been provided by the town of Domazlice. The reconstruction resulted in a notable facelift of the historical building, which now attract attention of most visitors of Domazlice. A new automatic gas boiler was installed as a part of the reconstruction, further changes were made in the school canteen. The basic school is partially funded by the town of Domazlice and functions as an independent legal entity consisting of:
Nearly 800 pupils are attending the junior and senior basic schools at the moment. There are about 25 pupils per class on average. In order to improve teaching effectiveness classes are divided into two groups for all foreign language classes and once a week for a Czech language and math class in the first and second year of the junior and all grades of the senior basic school. The junior basic school has five grades. The foreign language courses start in the 4th grade, students can choose among German, English and French languages. The senior basic school has four grades. Starting in the 7th grade, students have an option to choose some of their classes. The optional subjects are following:
Furthermore, the students have an option to attend following voluntary subjects:
Because of the great interest students show in computers, computer interests clubs have been opened recently. As a result, students may attend computer classes as an optional or voluntary subject, or as an interest club. The school has a computer lab with 15 Windows XP computers connected to MS Windows Server 2003. Since 1999 the whole classroom is connected to the Internet by a fixed line of ISP CESNET provider (or more precisely their secondary provider RSV Net).
Computers are also used for various other subjects via specialized educational software (particularly for math, physics, geography, etc.). Special care is paid to students with learning disadvantages (dyslexia, dyscalculia, etc.) for whom tailored courses are designed with extensive use of educational software. There is a language lab and two well furnished libraries in the school where the students can borrow various books with course work related content, fiction, encyclopedia, etc. (about 4800 books on the whole).
A canteen is also a part of the basic school and has been reconstructed recently. 1900 meals are served there daily for students, teachers, staff and also for other organizations in Domazlice. In 1999, a credit card system was introduced, enabling a choice of two, and in the future three, dishes. View of one wing of the canteen The school nursery is fitted with new fashionable furniture and its capacity of 100 pupils in 4 groups meets the requirements of the school. One group of school nursery Over the course of academic year a great number of various school events for children of different ages is organized by our school. Many sports tournaments, theatre, concerts, exhibition visits, etc. belong to everyday life of the school; it is not possible to name all of them. The annual one-week skiing trip for students of the 7th grade and the annual trip to England for students learning English are the most challenging ones from the point of view of organization. We have established very close contacts with a basic school in the near town of Furt im Wald (Bavaria) and mutual visits students and teachers have become commonplace. The school has also its own sports club. Its baseball team plays in the South Bohemian region school league. You can learn about the current school life and latest news in the school on the page
